Over a year ago, when the Labour government’s manifesto promised no new North Sea oil and gas, Just Stop Oil announced the end of their campaign.
Following an endless billionaire media onslaught demanding that every last drop be drained from the depleted North Sea oilfields, there have been consistent hints that the new Burnham government is about to cave in to those demands.
The billionaire media are obsessed with allowing billions more to be invested in destroying our future, by giving the go-ahead to the Jackdaw and Rosebank fossil fuel projects.
So, understandably, Just Stop New Oil returned to stage a peaceful sit-down outside Parliament. Forty-seven people were arrested under the new punitive legislation banning peaceful sit-downs — legislation successfully demanded by the billionaire media.
Cue screams of outrage.
How dare Just Stop New Oil partially block one junction, out of 70,000 road junctions in London?
I was invited onto GB News and had the privilege of defending the return of their peaceful protests, and their bravery. The other guest was a former police chief presented as a “terrorism expert”, who specialises in smearing peaceful protesters against climate destruction and against the genocide in Gaza.
Don’t look up
The interview was a parody of the film Don’t Look Up.
- The Himalayan glaciers are melting and killing thousands of people — but how dare you block one junction.
- The UK has had one of its worst harvests on record — but how dare you block one junction.
- The Labour government is breaking its promise to ban all new fossil fuel projects in the North Sea — but how dare you block one junction.
- The UK is one of the largest sources of funding for global fossil fuel expansion — but how dare you block one junction.
- The climate crisis is causing repeated, horrific wildfires across Europe — but how dare you block one junction.
- The national security services warn that climate destruction is one of the greatest national security threats to the UK — but how dare you block one junction.
- The UK had five extreme heatwaves this summer and a deep drought — but how dare you block one junction.
This is what media capture looks like
A functioning press would weigh a partial blockage of one junction against the destruction of the conditions our food supply depends on, and report accordingly.
A captured press runs the junction.
That is not a failure of judgement. It is the predictable output of a media owned by people whose fortunes depend on the fossil fuel economy continuing exactly as it is.
We need to end climate-trashing media billionairism before it ends us all.
Our petition closes on Friday 18 September.
