Behind the Tory War on Carbon-Free 2050

The fifth of the five measures in the Media Sovereignty Act is a ban on dark-money funded “think tanks”, that are the route by which the billionaire class and oil-corporations often secretly buy their way to undemocratic political power in the UK.
I accidentally stumbled on a poisoned nest of such climate-trashing vipers when I was invited onto GB News to discuss an embargoed speech on a new think tank report trashing electricity decarbonisation, by then Tory Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho.
She was announcing the tearing up of nearly all the climate policies that her own Tory government had been implementing.
The lesson the Tories appear to have taken from the extreme droughts devastating British farmers this summer, and the thousands killed by the climate crisis melting the Himalayan glaciers in Nepal, is to Burn Baby Burn more genocidal fossil fuels.
Badenoch is determined to win back the former Tory billionaire press, who abandoned the Tory Party to back the climate-trashing Reform Party.
And the dark-money fossil fuelled think tanks are all too happy to provide the media opportunities, with “reports” to back her political fossil-fuelled assault on Britain’s farmers, our economy and indeed on Britain’s literally flooding sea-borders.
Who Funds Onward?
The “report” Coutinho was launching was from a Tory aligned think tank called Onward.
My research for the GB News interview revealed that Onward’s donors in 2025 included the privatised National Grid, Equinor-Statoil, co-owner of the hugely controversial oilfield Rosebank, Shell and BP.
Onward refused my press request to reveal this year’s dark-money donors.
So we have no idea who else may be behind the funding of the think tank producing this climate-trashing report, “Firm Foundations”.
The Report’s Findings Were Hilarious
One of their main theories was that UK electricity could be far cheaper if we dropped all new clean cheaper energy and ramped up new fossil gas and nuclear power stations, despite these being among the most expensive new energies on the market currently.
But buried deep in the “report” I found that this “cheaper” electricity depended on both fossil gas and new nuclear being far cheaper than they are at present.
Even more hilariously, they admitted to me that it was “reasonable to point out the role of gas spikes”.
